On Thursday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m., The Mainstay in Rock Hall will feature three Brazilian musicians making a rare Eastern Shore appearance. Virtuoso bassist Leonardo Lucini and his brother, drummer Alejandro Lucini, will accompany brilliant guitarist Rogerio Souza. They will perform genuine Brazilian Samba, Samba Choro and Bossa Nova music characterized by beautiful melodies, harmonies, and irresistible rhythms.
This will be The Mainstay’s third and final concert of the year celebrating the golden anniversary of the recording of Jazz Samba. Fronted by guitarist Charlie Byrd and saxophonist Stan Getz, that historic album introduced millions of music lovers worldwide to the music of Brazil, and helped foster a great cultural exchange between America and Brazil, which continues to this day.
Rogerio Souza is an award-winning traditional Brazilian guitarist, composer and educator. He is one of the most important Brazilian recording artists to tour in the United States. Since debuting in his native Rio De Janeiro in the early 80s, Souza has recorded with other top Brazilian artists including Baden Powell, Sivuca, and the choro-group Época De Ouro. He has performed at the Festival Villa Lobos in Brazil, the International Jazz Festival in Denmark, the Stadgarden Festival in Germany, the Festival of Ibero-American Culture in Chile, and other prestigious venues around the world. He is also a founding member of one of Brazil’s most cutting-edge ensembles, No em Pingo D’Agua (a knot in a drop of water), with whom he has released six recordings.
Also from Rio, the Lucini brothers have performed together for more than a decade. They have played with acclaimed international musicians such as Alex Brown, Benito Gonzalez and Federico Peña; saxophonists Jeff Antoniuk, Alex Han, Leo Gandelman and Raul Mascarenha. In the States where they currently reside, they have delighted audiences at Smithsonian museums, the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, Blues Alley and Carter Baron Amphitheater. They also teach jazz and Brazilian music at the college level and will perform and teach with Souza at many colleges and universities during his American tour.
The Mainstay celebrated the music of Brazil with concerts featuring guitarist Nate Najar with vibraphonist and drummer Chuck Redd in March, and hosted the international Veronneau band with saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk in May.
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is a storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old-time Main Street. It was deemed an ideal location for this concert since it was a favored venue of legendary guitarist Charlie Byrd. A collection of memorabilia in the reception area includes a cover of the world famous Jazz Samba album on the wall.
The Souza and Lucini Brothers show begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. The band has sold out shows in a long string of cities. Call 410-639-9133 or visit https://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
