St. Anne’s Episcopal School has invited Mr. Robert Seeley, a direct descendent of Delaware abolitionist Thomas Garrett and an authority on the Underground Railroad in Delaware, to speak to middle school students and faculty about an important piece of Delaware history that took place less than a mile from St. Anne’s. On December 27th, 1845 Mr. John Hunn, Sr., a Quaker landowner whose farm included the land which is today Middletown High School and Willow Grove Mill became active in the abolitionist movement when he gave shelter to the Hawkins family who was fleeing north in search of freedom from slavery. What happened in the days, weeks, and years that followed is a gripping story of how Hunn and Thomas Garrett risked all they had in defense of what they believed to be right. John Hunn Sr. is the father of John Hunn, the 51st governor of Delaware.
The talk will be held Wednesday, February 11 at 2:30 at St. Anne’s Episcopal School, 211 Silver Lake Rd. Middletown, DE, in the school gymnasium.
