Mary Handley, Mobility Manager at Maryland Upper Shore Transit (MUST) asked the town council during their March 2 meeting to consider adding a more centralized downtown bus stop for their transportation services.
Currently, bus stops are located throughout the year at the old Rose’s store location at Kent Plaza and Dollar General. Kent County Library, Kent Community Center. and Bayside Foods in Rock Hall are also included June 15 through August 31.
Handley suggested that the community would be better served if a bus stop could be more centrally located, pointing out that space might be available near Park Row or High Street.
The council was open to ideas for a bus-stop in town but asked Handley to study the proposed area closely for space and traffic issues. Town Manager Bill Ingersoll said that the standard bus stop signage Handley brought to the meeting does not meet downtown standards and an alternative would have to be considered.
MUST has been operating in Kent County for two years and is a public transportation network connecting Dorchester, Caroline, Kent, Talbot and Queen Anne’s County. Buses also run from Centreville to Annapolis Mall.
“MUST is a collaborative public transportation effort between Delmarva Community Transit and Queen Anne’s County, County Ride providing fixed route and deviated fixed route services to the general public throughout Maryland’s Mid-and-Upper Eastern Shore. Special services are available for persons with disabilities or who are unable to use the regional fixed routes,” their website reads.
Fares are $3.00 for the general public, $1.50 for Seniors (60+), $2.00 for 17 and under, and free for Veterans going to any VA facility, counseling or AA meetings. Some door to door dervice is provided for people with disabilities and buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts.
“We even have a Travel Trainer,” Handley says. “For someone 60+ or with disabilities and who has never traveled by bus, travel trainers will ride with you.”
The transit manager was invited back to the council after she studied the downtown area for possible bus stop sites.
“If you haven’t taken a bus ride through our area, you should—it’s a wonderful change of perspective,” Handley added.
