Local artists, Patti & Dave Hegland, have been named winners of the prestigious 2013 NICHE Award for excellence in fine craft design.
Winners of the 2013 Niche Awards were announced at a ceremony held during the Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 16. Of over 1000 entries, 40 entries won awards in several professional categories, including ceramics, metal, jewelry, fiber, and glass.
The Heglands won the “Fused Glass” category for their piece, “Amber Feathers – Inlay”. Since 1990, the Niche competition has annually recognized excellence and innovation in North American craft. Judging is based on three criteria: technical excellence in surface design and form, market viability and a distinct quality of unique and creative thought.
The Heglands recently relocated Hegland Glass to 315 High Street, Suite 103 in downtown Chestertown. This is a working artist studio, and visitors are welcome to make an appointment to tour the space, learn about the process, and see the extensive equipment and materials needed to create their award-winning contemporary kiln-formed art glass. A selection of functional and sculptural Hegland Glass is also on display and available for purchase. www.heglandglass.com
